Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the single TLD intended for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained active.
